Tim and I spent a lot of time along the coast in Bizkaia, between Algorta and Plentzia. We both loved the beaches, the cliffs, and the sea. I spent a lot of time looking for the right place for Tim. We thought about him being in the UK, with our mum. We thought of taking him to Japan. We considered leaving him in Sweden.
But in the end there was no question that he should be in Spain where we grew up.
After a long search I found the perfect spot. High up on the cliffs, in the middle of the sea, lashed by the wind and rain. It's very hard to find, very private, and a good place to sit and think.
Directions
If you are in the area and want to go and see Tim, here is how to get there.
Get to the fort at La Galea (El Fuerte de La Galea). You can drive (there is a free car park behind the fort) or take the metro to Bidezabal and walk (probably about 30-40 minutes up a slight hill).
Then walk away from the fort along the coast, with the sea to your left.
When you get to the weather station, you are close.
After the fountain, you are going to turn off the path in the dip, before it climbs again.
This is the path. Head for the benches near the cliff.
Head past the benches and follow the path towards the cliff.
Keep heading down the path. It gets a bit steep at times, and the soil can be loose.
You'll see some graves/markers on the right hand side. Keep heading down.
Keep going until you reach the staircase. The little platform beyond it is the place.
There is no memorial yet, but we'll put one there next year.
